JAN 2018: BU SUMMER THEATER INSTITUTE APPLICATION IS NOW LIVE!!
The Boston University Summer Theatre Institute is a five-week conservatory experience for highly motivated high school theatre artists. Designed to mirror the freshman BFA experience within the College of Fine Arts School of Theatre at Boston University, the Institute allows all participants the opportunity to test their interests and abilities in a professional training environment. Students earn 4.0 college credits for their coursework in acting, design, voice, singing, and stage combat, as well as master classes, experimental theatre laboratories, and the creation of an original piece of theatre with members of their ensemble. Throughout the five-week program, students engage with Boston University, the professional artistic community in Boston, and the city’s historic and cultural offerings. Students graduate from BUSTI having honed their technique, depth of intellectual and artistic questioning, playfulness in collaboration, and ability to tell a dynamic story through the theatrical medium.
BUSTI annually admits 56-70 students who are passionate about training in acting and design, open to collaborating with other artists, and curious to discover the possibilities of the theatrical form. We accept applications from rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. To apply, visit:
AUG 2017: New Round of funding announced for Daniel J. Rabone Memorial scholarship
First recipient announced and enrolled in summer program
(BOSTON, MA) — The Daniel J. Rabone Memorial Memorial Fund announces new fundraising efforts to ensure its scholarship program at Boston University Summer Theatre Institute continues to assist young theatre artists for years to come.
The Daniel J. Rabone Memorial Scholarship provides financial support for one or more attendees of the Boston University Summer Theatre Institute (BUSTI), a five-week conservatory experience for motivated high school theatre artists where students learn how to tell a dynamic story through the theatrical medium. All applicants for financial aid are automatically considered for this Scholarship; there is no separate application required. The inaugural scholarship recipient is Dana Connolly, a high school junior from Arlington, MA.
The Memorial Fund honors the memory of Daniel J. Rabone, an active participant in Boston-area community theatre plays and musicals who inspired audiences with his vibrancy, creativity, and humanity.
“The fund is a concrete way to continue Daniel’s vibrant legacy as a theatre artist and mentor,” said Richard Trevino, Daniel’s husband of 20 years.
A new round of fundraising has been announced to increase the fund to its goal of $100,000, to ensure that cost is never a barrier for participation for students in the BUSTI. The Fund has already raised $50,000 toward this goal.
“Daniel was an extraordinary leading man and character actor who gave all of himself over to a role, cast, and creative team,” said Erica Spyres, an actor and theatre educator who worked with Daniel over the years. “He touched people’s lives on stage and off as an actor, director, writer, and designer. There is a huge void now that he is gone and this scholarship will ensure that his generous and creative spirit will live on in future young artists.”
For more information on the Scholarship or to make a gift in support of it, please contact Richard Trevino at email@example.com or 617-571-2833. Learn more about Daniel’s inspirational life at danielrabone.com.

Daniel’s vibrancy, creativity and humanity is sorely missed and has left a void to those privileged to meet him. Ever-present was his honesty, clever wit and charismatic charm.
Daniel played an active role in many communities with an overarching theme of being a mentor. It gave Daniel great purpose to be able to inspire a person to ask (and answer) challenging questions or create goals for themselves. His extreme talent in guiding others exceled here, and he inspired many in all facets/stages of life. Daniel was able to accomplish this because he always challenged himself under the same conditions.
The Daniel J. Rabone Memorial Fund has been established to continue the legacy Daniel left to the Boston area theatre community. His love of musical theatre and performing was infectious to any and all that had the opportunity to work with him.
The Daniel J. Rabone Memorial Fund will provide one or more scholarships to students enrolled in the Boston University Summer Theatre Institute (BUSTI); specifically to students who live in and around the Greater Boston area.
At the current time we are in the fundraising stage in order to solidify an endowment in Daniel’s name, which will continue in perpetuity.
